Context of use:
The earring is fit through the (rather large) pierced hole in the earlobe, and the leather thong or cord is looped around the ear. In this manner the thong or cord supports the weight of the heavy earring at keeps it hanging correctly, so that the jeweled face of the earring is always displayed in the front.
