Twined basketry. Cover for basket (missing). Large knob. Design band is series of separated brown and black rectangles. Tag "Kl. R. Tr. Att.". There is a swastika in ink on the interior of the lid. Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket lid. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design background is beargrass, with red dyed woodwardia and maiden hair fern designs. Starting at the starting knot, there is plain twining until one inch from the rim, where there is one weft row of lattice twining. Plain twining continues until the rim, which is trimmed. The main exterior design is a horizontal band of maidenhair fern and woodwardia rectangles, with a flower shape at the base of the knob. The interior design is a band of woodwardia and beargrass rectangles. The overlay is double-sided, but is primarily on the exterior. The lid has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwest California, possibly Whilkut based on the interior design band.
