Description: "The "insets" are repairs. 'Umeke la'au (wooden bowl) 'Umeke 'ai (food bowl, vegetable). The "t" has been replaced ["Umeti" on card] by the "k" but may have been used when this bowl was collected. Kou wood (cordia subordata) uncertain. A very fine 'umeke, well-shaped and excellent craftsmanship. The number of repairs is extraordinary. To repair a bowl is a mark of respect. For more on repairs, "pahanohano", over. " Back of card: "Hiroa Te Rangi, (Peter Buck). p. 43 "Repairing. pewa; an "hourglass"; average size 2 inches long x 1 inch wide at ends. Doesn't show on inside of bowl.
