Accession number:
Acc.4054
Description:
Black and white image of a Sinhalese beggar. Hoefler's original description: "Island of Ceylon. A Sinhalese beggar. This ragged man with a troubled look, came stalking along near the Temple of the Tooth, with his umbrella under one arm and a cooking pot in one hand. In a sack slung from his shoulder he carried the rest of his worldly possessions. Begging in this country is an honorable profession, and not an uncomfortable state of existence, for there is no intense cold to be discomforting and ample food can be plucked along the wayside, the few annas contributed by soft-hearted people providing luxuries.
