Description:
Netsuke: very tall monkey dressed as man, wearing sun hat. According to the donor's catalog: "Monkey holding a persimmon. There are no tales that specifically connect this animal with the fruit. The monkey is a sign of the zodiac, but the wistful expression and shy pose of the body is rare for a netsuke depicting monkeys. 8.2 centimeters, made of ivory. The fairly large size of this piece may indicate an early date, around 1700.
