Coiled, red and black design. Tag "S. Calif". Sticker "Unidentified". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled burden basket. Deergrass bundle foundation. The base wefts are sumac; the design wefts are in orange and black-dyed juncus and the background is tan juncus. The rim has six rows of sumac wefts. The design is a broad band outlined by a single coil of black-dyed juncus. In the center of the band is a horizontal diamond chain below that is a zigzag. The workface is on the interior. The work direction is to the right. The basket has bound under as well as clipped weft fag ends. It has a plain wrapped rim. The coil ending has about two inches of herringbone stitches. There is a hair woven into the basket on the side near one of the diamonds. The basket is attributed to the Cahuilla based on the use of clipped and bound under weft fag ends.
