Globular twined basket with multicolored glass beads on one side. Tag "Klamath River Att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Globular basket bowl with glass beads on one side. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is possibly hazel or willow. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass and red-dyed woodwardia fern. At the starting knot there is .5 inch of three strand twining followed by 1.75 inches of plain twining until the edge of the base where there is one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues up to the rim where there are four weft rows of three strand twining. At the base there are alternating beargrass and conifer root wefts. Above the weft row three strand twining is 1.25 inch wide band of beargrass. Above that are vertical woodwardia and beargrass lines. The glass beads cover 2.5 inches on the side of the basket. They consist of two sizes, in seed bead size and the next size up. There are many colors. They are sewn on. The addition of the beads is unusual. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The basket has a rightward work direction with an exterior workface. The overlay is on the outside. The rim is trimmed. The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Karuk based on the designs.
