Accession number:
Acc.4054
Description:
4 X 5" black and white negative of the beach on the Island of Ceylon. Hoefler's original description: "Island of Ceylon. A view of the beach near Mount Lavinia. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean roll in long gentle swells to break on this beautiful sandy beach, and here the residents of Colombo, who love surf-bathing, go to enjoy this refreshing sport in the cool of the evening. There are larger beaches in the world, but none of them better, and the nearby hotel offers wonderful meals, including dishes typical of the country. This hotel, perched high above the waves, has an interesting history, for it was builded over a hundred years ago as a Governor's palace."
