Description:
Coiled, bowl shape basket. Accompanying tag reads: "Basket. Round, flat base, design of butterflies alternating with flowers in brown on natural ground. H. - 10.8cm., diam. - 23.7 cm. Materials, techniques: Devil's claw, tule root, coiled. 7-19-1995. Attached paper tag attributes basket to Washo, found on Washo shelf. L. Dawson attributes basket to Panamint on the basis of the materials, workmanship, stitch type, and splices." Tag on Basket: "Washo Sept. 27, 1938 made by Laura M. 9" dia. 4" hi. L.L.L." Per Ralph Shanks: rightward warp, in Panamint style. Willow background with bulrush root (tule root scirpus) for black. Foundation is mostly 3 rod. Rim is single rod. 12 pointed star on bottom with 8 pointed star inside that, on sides are European inspired designs of butterflies and flowers. Butterflies are yellow on the inside of bowl.
