Cast of colossal bust of Serapis or Jupiter Serapis. From a marble in the Vatican, Rome. Restored: all but the bottom of the modius, large piece at back of head, nose, fragments of hair and robe. The original was found on the Appian Way, nine miles from Rome. Serapis was sometimes worshipped as a sun god, “this head was surrounded with metal aureole of rays, which were fastened in the holes bored in the filler.” Helbig, no. 304. Seems to date from the time of Antonines.
