Bowl shape with flattened bottom. Twined with hazel shoot warp and pine root weft, overlay of Xerophyllum tenax and alder dyed Woodwardia fern in linear diamond design. Rim of open criss - cross pattern. Two tags "Klamath R. Tribes Att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined globular basket, probably made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot, indented. The warp material is probably willow. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design is beargrass, red dyed woodwardia and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot, there are 2 inches of plain strand twining, followed by 1 row of three strand twining, followed by 1 weft row of plain twining, followed by 1 row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim where there is 1 weft row of three strand twining followed by 1/2 inch of crossed warp open work. The rim is comprised of 1 weft row of plain twining with three reinforcing rods wrapped with two materials. The main design is two horizontal rows of diamonds. The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, on the exterior. The basket is from Northwest California.
