8 x 10" Negative. Image depicts lions feeding on a fallen zebra. Hoefler's original description: "Lions on a zebra kill. Just before dinner. A group of lions pictured just before they commenced to feed on a young zebra which they had stalked and killed. In stalking their prey, lions use extreme cunning. They seem to know that the lion-scent which the air currents will carry of their whereabouts to the plains animals, will cause a panic among the zebra or antelope, and using this advantage they place one or more of the troop in hiding down wind and then the others circle the herds until they stampede towards the waiting killers, who spring upon the nearest animal. A lion kills swiftly. This photograph was taken from the ant hill near the water hole, and shows how we were able after a time to creep right up on them."
