Large, twined basket. Tag "Northwest Calif. att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined storage basket. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably willow. The wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay is red-dyed woodwardia and beargrass. Green/brown string is at the rim in several areas, possibly as a repair. At the starting knot there is three strand twining. After that plain twining continues 3 inches where there are three weft rows of three strand twining. Plain twining continues after that up to the rim where there is a .25 inch of open warps. The rim has multiple rods reinforcing it wrapped in wild grape. The interior has three bands of reinforcing rods. The design includes several bands of triangles. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The overlay is single sided on the exterior with some design coming through to the interior. The basket is from Northwestern California.
