- Description:
- Round with concave base. Circular geometric design in black on straw-colored ground. Conifer root warp and weft, plain twined, white grass and maidenhair fern half twist overlay. Label "# 28 Scott loan". Second label "N.W. Calif Att." Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, slightly indented. The warp material is possibly hazel. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass and maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there is 1.5 inch of plain twining followed by a single weft row of three strand twining followed by 3 weft rows of diagonal twining, followed by a single weft row of plain twining, followed by 4 weft rows of diagonal twining. Plain twining continues up to the rim. The main design is two bands of triangles. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The basket has a rightward work direction with an exterior workface. The overlay is mainly on the outside, with two bands of beargrass overlay on the inside but no design. The rim is trimmed. The surface of the basket undulates due to the warps. The basket is from Northwest California, possibly Southern Humboldt Athabaskan.
