Description:
4" x 5" Negative. Kiya Be, French Congo. Two women with disks in their nose. The woman on the right has a stretched lip with disk in her lip. Hoefler's original description: "French Congo. Leaders of the social set. This practice originated in order to prevent the capture of their women by the slave raiders. After the need had passed the disfigurement was carried on as an established custom. The older the woman, the larger the disks, and the larger the disk the higher her social standing. They are now forbidden to dilate the lips by the French government.
