Overlay twined basket. Label: "N.W Cal. Att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket, lid shaped. The warp material is probably willow. It has a crossed warp starting knot. The weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass and red dyed woodwardia. At the starting knot there is .5 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining for 1.5 inches, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until the rim. The design is in four horizontal bands. The innermost band is diagonal beargrass and woodwardia stripes, followed by a solid woodwardia band, the third band is diagonal stripes, the fourth band is comprised of three sets of three elements: two triangles on either side of a trapezoid. The rim is trimmed. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction. The workface is on the exterior. The design is primarily on the exterior with two irregular design bands on the interior. There is some twine, at the end of the weft row, and as a repair in another part of the rim. The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Whilkut based on the interior secondary designs.
