Accession number:
Acc.153 and Acc.193
Description:
Cast of the vase of Mithridates. From the bronze original in the Capitoline Museum, Rome, found at Antium, Italy. A dedication engraved on the original is not visible on the cast. It recited the presentation of the vase by Mithridates the Great Eupator, King of Pontos, to a club named after him. This thiasos of Eupatorists must have been formed in a century of the Mithridatic alliance, from which the vase was brought to Italy as loot, possibly at Athens. Foot and handle are modern restoration. Consult Corpus Inscriptionum Graecarum II, 2278. Righetti, Il Campidoglio I, Plate 134. Friederichs-Wolters 2034.
