Extra large plain twined flat basket in white and brown. Narrow bands and broad zigzag patterns. Tag on bottom "252". Tag on the outside "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket tray, perhaps a flour/ sifting tray. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or possibly willow. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass. At the starting knot there is 1 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until 1 inch below the rim, where there are 2 weft rows of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining. The main design is comprised of vertical zig zags outlined by triangles, broken up by the two weft rows of three strand twining. The basket has an interior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is primarily on the inside. The rim is trimmed. There are three rows of reinforcing rods tacked on to the exterior. There are hairs woven into the basket. The basket is from Northwestern California.
