Coiled basketry tray with black step design in 7 series in spiral order; old and broken. On bottom of basket two tags "No. 221. Property of Mrs. George H. Taylor Fresno Cal. Second tag "221.". Two tags hanging off of rim area "Cahuilla" and one tag with the catalog number. Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled winnowing basket with rim in poor condition. Deergrass bundle foundation. Background wefts are sumac and the designs are black dyed juncus. Design is one black circle at the base with seven black stepped vertical lines ending at a second circle about three rows below the rim of the basket. This is a common design in Luiseño baskets. The basket has an interior workface with a rightward work direction and bound under weft fag ends. The basket is attributed to the Luiseño based on the location of collection, Soboba, the materials, the technical features, and the design layout.
