Description:
Cast of lion couchant with a ring on his back, Assyrian. From a bronze original found Louvre Museum, Paris. Perrot and Chipiez, History of Art in Chaldaea and Assyria. A similar but smaller lion in the British Museum bears and inscription. “Weighted before the supervisors of silver,” in Phoenician characters. Taylor, The Alphabet. They were explained as anchors for flag halyards. They are more probably standard weights.
