Comment:
Per Robeson Accession File: Netsuke of cock and drum. A netsuke very frequent in art, as an allusion to Chinese story [sic]. In legendary times, a large drum was placed at the gates of the palace to assemble the troops. Under the rule of the great Emporer Yao, peace being general, the drum fell into disuse, and became a roosting place for fowls while the people themselves used to come and beat it, when they had to seek redress from some grievance.
