Melanesia, New Guinea, Eastern division of Papua. Pyroengraved bamboo frame. Description by painter: "That this is not a business trip... is confirmed by his[Iomai's] ornamentation, the newly bleached hair, carefully mowed, the gay plume in it, the red and black lines painted across his face, the nose bone (actually shell) and fringes of seaweed that also adorn the gunwales and ends of the canoe. ("raggle-taggle" decoration)... Such sailing outriggers as the one illustrated are made entirely of native materials and shaped by hand with a "trade" steel adze.....Sails are made by splitting a large palm front down the midrib and placing the halves together so that the leaflets run in opposite directions
