Used in preparation of materials for curing. Used by Thomas Smith for grinding pigments, etc. A basket is placed under the mortar when in use to catch any spill over.

Comment:
Mortars and pestles are washed in sea water (only) before they are used, and both are "steamed" over angelica and laurel (California bay) before they are used. The "steaming" removes any contamination due to contact with a previous patient. 1-157472-157500 and 1-157713-16 comprise outfit of Thomas Smith; outfit was family heirloom.
