The lakes that contribute so much to the beauty of Udaipur also serve many useful purposes. Scene shows the bathing ghats where the population come to wash themselves and their clothing and here the housewives forgather to gossip with their neighbors, the while they scrub the cooking utensils. When these chores are done, the ladies fill their water jars, and gracefully balancing them on top of their heads, stroll leisurely back thru one of the many gates to the city, which is shown in the background.
