8 x 10" Negative. Image depicts “kimaranguchet” headdress, used in circumcision rites on the Nandi Reserve. Hoefler's original description: "Near Kapsabet, Nandi Reserve. Close view of the “kimaranguchet” headdress, showing the dead birds hanging from the cross strings. The killing of these small birds and the hanging of them in the rigging of the headpiece is part of the rites of circumcision through which all boys must go; for failure to do so means that he can never become a warrior, and that his spirit will not live after death."
