This is an Atsugewi basket fish trap, an important hunting tool as fish was a staple of Atsugewi sustenance and were prepared in a variety of ways such as boiling, drying, and cooked in earth ovens, depending on the type of fish. In this trap, fish can get in but not out, and are retrieved by untying the cord holding the pointy side together. These were usually made of willow, and used in streams. It seems that there is just about a tool designed for every type of fish from salmon to minnows, and every type of aquatic environment from holes to falls.
