Statue of Demosthenes. This is probably a copy of a bronze by Polyeuctos, dedicated in 280 B.C., 42 years after the orator’s death. in the bronze original the orator was represented standing with folded hands and mourning the overthrow of liberty. the later artist emphasized Demosthenes’ literary eminence rather than his political struggle. From a marble in the Vatican, Rome. restored: lower half of forearms, scroll, most of plinth. cf. Helbig no. 30.
