8 x 10" Negative. Image of African group assembled in a line. White man in the middle has been identified as Paul L. Hoefler. Hoefler's original description: "In the Land of the Dwarfs. Many days we spent in the forest with these little people of the winding paths, who rarely come into open places like this. After they had been in this clearing for three days they began to get uneasy and wanted to return into the deeper forest. By giving them presents we managed to keep them near us until the work was done and then they faded into the primal wilderness they love. Several days were spent in the forest with these little men of the winding paths, who seldom come into the open. After they had been in the clearing for three days they began to get uneasy, saying they did not like it there and wanted to go back into the cool places far in the forest depths. By promising them presents and salt we managed to keep them a few days longer. As soon as we told them they could go and gave presents around, there was a wild yell and in a wink they had vanished down the paths that lead from nowhere to no place. The white man in the photo is Hoefler."
