8 x 10" Negative. Image depicting row of Nandi warriors. Hoefler's original description: "15 Brave Men and True. Nandi Warriors. Just before the first lion encounter, in which the youth standing in the back with the white shells on his head dress took the lion's charge all alone. Although his spear did not kill it outright, still he came out of the fray in good shape. The spears are called "ngotit" and the shields are "long," while the headdress is "kutua," if of lion man, and "sombe" if of ostrich feather. Photograph taken in typical Tanganyika (Tanzania) scenery near Camp Simba. This photo was taken the day before the first lion encounter, and Hoefler had been bantering with the Nandi, saying that the women in America wore big hats also. After the first spearing, they all came up to shake hands and ask if they were women or men!!
