4 x 5" Black and white negative of beaters meeting up before tiger hunt. Hoefler's original description: "Gwalior State, Central India. Beaters arriving at the rendezvous previous to the tiger hunt. When a day has been set for a hunt, word is sent out through the proper officials and the countrymen collect from miles around at the call of their Maharaja. It is the duty of these men to beat through the jungle on foot, shouting and hitting their sticks against trees, in order to drive the tigers in front of the shooting boxes or machans, wherein wait the Maharaja and his guests. Frequently these men are badly mauled or killed by enraged tigers, which break back through the beat." (Envelope marked: "Tiger beaters")
