Accession number:
Acc.4812
Description:
Half of a two-piece rug, mafrash. Asymmetrical pattern. Plain weave: stripes with checks and horizontal stripes in the same band, 1.25" wide. Not sure how they did that, unless black and white yarns were "borrowed" rather than chosen from pairs of darks and lights. Rich, warm colors, many dyed over gray yarn. Orange, pale yellow, maroon, black, gray, and some white. Weft twining at one end in three bands, two with zig-zag and one with diamonds in mock-'weirjan pattern. Three colors used in the twining with floats twisted together in the back. The other end of the rug has no finishing - came right off the rod, loops short and intact. Z-ply. Plain weave, weft twining, 11 EPI. Weft twining, unfinished loops. Made for sale. Possibly some or all natural dyes. Has distinctive western use of colors, rich and warm.
