A black-and-white photographic print from negative 15-30718, an Indian palace. A paper caption is attached and reads: "WATCH YOUR CREDIT LINE; PHOTO COPYRIGHTED BY PAUL HOEFLER. UD 21. THE PALACE OF THE MAHARANA, UDAIPUR INDIA. Udaipur is known as "The City of Sunrise", an English corruption of the true meaning of the word "Udaipur", which actually means "place of the rising sun." This view of the Maharana's beautiful palace, taken from an island in Pichola Lake, gives an impressive beginning to a picture tour of this medieval city, one of the most enchanting places in the world, where time stopped centuries ago and has never since stood still; where vast hords of gold, silver and priceless gems repose in palace vaults and where noble and beggar mingle in the Rai Angan, or Royal Courtyard.
