Accession number:
Acc.153 and Acc.193
Description:
Cast of Ashur. Twice. A winged and tailed circle frames the bust and areas of a bearded deity of Assyrian style. On its back is an eye for suspension by a chain. The object was a cauldron handle. From a bronze discovered and preserved at Olympia, Greece. A specimen exactly like our next beardless deity has been found near Van, Armenia, and confirms the Asiatic origin of the model. The half figure in a winged circle was a common Oriental rendering of the supreme god. Syrrus and Darius pray to the symbol on the sculptured rocks of Behistan, Persia. Olympia IV Plate 44. Friederichs-Wolters 362.
