Photo: 15-8703. Published: AAE, v. 32, #1, pl 47 b. Per Ralph Shanks: Twined storage basket, unused. Crossed warp starting knot, indented. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass and maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there is 1.5 inch of three strand twining followed by 3 inches of plain twining, followed by three weft rows of three strand twining. Plain twining continues until three weft rows below the rim, where there are two weft rows of three strand twining followed by one weft row of plain twining. The rim is trimmed. The basket is almost entirely covered in overlay. The main design is a repeating pattern of stacked triangles in a diamond shape. The base has three horizontal rows of designs, include two bands of triangles and a checkered pattern. At the rim is one horizontal row of checkered triangles. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is on the exterior. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist, and a rightward work direction. The basket is from Northwestern California.
