- Bias strip. Black silk satin ground, embroidered in two rows with multi-color "hundred antiques" design. Bowls of flowers, butterflies, and gold Buddhist symbols. L. 1 m. 14 cm. W 17 cm. Background: silk, satin weave. Pattern area: untwisted silk, gold wrapped silk; satin stitch, Chinese knot, couching, various filling stitches. Never used; would have been out into two strips and attached to a skirt or jacket as borders and worn on special occasions. 19th c. Symbolism: Butterfly - joy, summer; Peony - riches, honor, love, spring; Plum blossom - long life, winter; Grass orchid - modesty; Rhino horn - protector; Musical stones - harmony; Joo-i - power, scepter Mary V.
