Cast of Medusa (gorgon) Ludovisi--forehead fastened to a modern plaque, now in the National Museum. Was part of a statue akin to the Pergamene giants and Gauls, terracotta. Restored: nose, right half nether lip, neck, tips of hair, plaque, left side flattens to meet a ground. Julius Sachs in New York calls the head a dying Amazon; Helbig a Sleeping Fury. “There is scarcely a work of ancient art in which the horror of death is portrayed with equal power and mastery.” Friederichs Wolters. Ludovisi Collection of the National Museum, Rome. Friederichs 1419. Formerly in the Villa Ludovisi-Boncompagui, Rome. The Italian Government bought the Ludovisi sculptures for 1,400,000 francs. Expert estimate was 1,750,000.
