Basketry tray. Overlay twined, black and brown design. Tag "Klamath R. Tribes". Second Tag "NW". Third tag "NW Calif". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket tray, in the shape of a flour/ sifting tray, probably not used. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or possibly willow. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there are 1.5 inches of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until 1 inch below the rim, where there are 2 weft rows of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim. The design at the base has a circle of triangles followed by a horizontal band that has triangles in positive and negative, followed by another band of downward pointing triangles, at the rim there are seven triangles. The basket has an interior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is primarily on the inside. The rim is trimmed. There are hairs woven into the basket.
