Container; a) hollowed zebu cow horn; b) hide cover; C) string tie; total length 28.5 cm, diameter at top 10.5 cm. For packing and export of civet, aromatic substance used as a fixative in perfumery. Extracted from the tail glands of captive animals in Ethiopia. Before import tariffs compelled the use of synthetic substitutes and alternatives, Indian perfumers used to import large quantities of civet in this form. This specimen was one of the few remaining with S.N. Kelkar, Indian perfumer. The lingering scent is not civet.
