4 x 5" Black and white negative of Nashik, a historically important town that is mentioned within the Ramayana. Hoefler's original description: " '4 x 5' Negative: British India. Nasik. This town, which is not a great distance from Bombay, has a great historical background. This photograph was taken while the Expedition was completing its last leg of the journey to Bombay, just previous to its departure for Ceylon. It was May and the heat was terrific, causing the members of the party to mentally dwell on the blessings of a country far-removed from this scene, where terrific heat and overpowering smells were unknown.
