8 x 10" Negative. Belgian Congo, near Uele River. Elephants. Hoefler's original description: "Elephants in the Belgian Congo. Taken near the Uele River after many weary hours to trek through the torrid heat. There are many thousands of elephants in this district, but due to constant hunting, they are very wild and dangerous. This photo was taken near the Uele River, after many weary hours search through the torrid heat of the jungle. There are many thousands of elephants in this district, one herd of two thousand being reported, but due to their almost constant hunting, they are very wild and dangerous. This group was simply a detached bunch from a larger herd which we were unable to overtake."
