color photographic print; matted "Micaela González's house; in front are her daughter Virginia Pichu, and William Iler, a UC Berkeley graduate student; July 15, 1959." [matted at PAHMA for exhibition]
In beginning our new work, Mary and I hoped to live much closer to the villagers, to be participant observers to the greatest degree possible. Here it was that an old friend, Doña Micaela González, her second husband Melecio Hernández, and her grown daughters Dolores and Virginia Pichu, rose to the challenge. With great apprehension, Micaela subsequently told us, and in response to [Gabriel] Ospina's urging, she agreed to put a glass window and a cement floor in a room for our use, to accept us into her home, to prepare our meals, to wash our clothing, and to answer our questions (1979).
