: Hearst Museum object titled Basketry, museum number 1-235166, described as Dish shaped basketry item. Twined. 2 encircling zigzag bands on inside. Tag "Klamath R. Tribes. att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket, dish shaped. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, wrapped. The warp material is probably hazel. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red dyed woodwardia. At the starting knot there is .5 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until the .5 inch below the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining up to the rim. The design starts with a band of checkered red dyed woodwardia and maiden hair fern. The main design is two horizontal zigzag rows of red dyed woodwardia and maidenhair fern. The rim is trimmed. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction. The overlay is one-sided. The basket is from Northwestern California.
