Hearst Museum object titled Army mug, accession number 9-23887, described as Tin army mug. The silver-gray body is cast with a five-pointed star and the slogan “Serve the People” (為人民服務Wei renmin fuwu). The middle character min is enclosed in the star. Aquisition data: Liulichang West, Beijing, Ms. Hao Yu. Purchased 2005 or earlier.
Hearst Museum object titled Glass mug, accession number 9-23845, described as Blue molded glass mug. The body is decorated with a female farmer holding a sickle, and a male worker holding a hammer, representing the unity of industrial and agricultural workers. Flanking the figures are radiating stars, a cog, and slogans surrounded by wheat tassels.
Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23476, described as Hand potted. A hand-painted slanted label reads: transmitting wealth and status to the world (傳世富貴 chuanshi fugui). It overlaps two drawing of rubbings of Han dynasty tiles. To the left is written in two vertical lines: “Inscriptions from Qin and Han dynasty tiles” (秦漢瓦甎銘文 Qin Han wazhuan mingwen).
Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23475, described as Hand-painted decoration. The color scheme is like other late-Qing to early-Republican ceramics (CF. British Museum teapot nos. 17 and 74). In a garden, two ladies sit on either side of a table. Both wear traditional hair-style and robes. Banana leaves in the garden signal relationships (xiangjiao 香蕉 a pun on 相交, which like “intercourse” can imply social and/or sexual relations) combined with the sleeve held to chin (opera gesture for intense emotion) suggest that this is a romantic tryst.
Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23516, described as The red-ground body is set with an oval reserve featuring a color decal of the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, vigorously beating the white-boned demon (a reference not only to the popular novel Journey to the West, but also to the demise of Madam Mao).

On the back, a lacy circle holds the four characters of the company’s name “Bright World” (明亮世界Mingliang shijie). The inclusion of the internet address was the first I had seen.
Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23896, described as Enamel mug. The front features a stenciled decoration of the red Tiananmen Gate and a blue dove above. The back features a long inscription that includes a slogan in the middle: Safeguard Motherland, safeguard peace (保衛祖國 保衛和平Baowei zuguo baowei heping). The rest states that the mug was a gift to heroes of the People’s Liberation Army, presented by the Representatives of the People of China in sympathy with the People’s Liberation Army. The top of the body is decorated with a ring of auspicious pattern in sky blue. Cobalt blue bowstring decorates the rim. The handle is partially decorated in the same color.

Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23944, described as Enamel mug. The army-green ground is stenciled in yellow with a quotation from Mao Zedong, ending with “Concern yourselves with the Country’s great affairs; carry the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution through to the end” (你們要关心国家大事，要把无产阶级文化大革命进行到底 Yao ba wuchan jieji wenhua dageming jinxing daodi), followed by Mao’s signature. Brown bowstring decorates the rim.
