Hearst Museum object titled Lacquer box, accession number 9-12584a,b, described as Box; lacquer globular shaped bottom with recessed foot.  Lid has nearly flat top, rounded edge, straight sides.  Decoration on lid depicts a pear, leaf, and bug, on a glossy chestnut-brown ground (kuri-iro-urushi).  The bug, leaf, and rim are of inlaid mother-of-pearl (ao-kai), the pear: of ochre lacquer.  Interior and bottom exterior is of glossy black (kuro-urushi).  A few scratches and spots on surface.
