Hearst Museum object titled Basketry cap, accession number 1-230644, described as Basketry, plain twined, meandering patterns in black and yellow on ground of beargrass overlay. Tule cordage warp, tule or cattail weft, overlay of split grass stems, yellow-dyed procupine quills and a black material.

Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot. Probably willow warps and conifer root wefts with an overlay of beargrass and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot there is three strand twining for 1/2 inch, followed by plain twining for 1 1/4 inches, followed by one weft row of lattice twining, followed by plain twining for 2 3/4 inches, followed by one weft row of lattice twining, followed by plain twining to the rim. The rim is trimmed. The overlay design is in seven horizontal bands with no overlay in-between the bands. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay design is on the exterior face with only a little beargrass on the interior. The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.

Hearst Museum object titled Basketry cap, accession number 1-255540, described as Basketry. Twined, domical. Top has brown center with four butterfly shapes around it. Main section has four bands of diagonally stacked trapezoids bisected into triangles by yellow and black lines. Two bands of sawtooth lines. Rim has four trapezoids. Tag "Klamath River Tribes". There looks to be some string used for stabilizing the breaks. Per Ralph Shanks: Twined woman's basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably willow or hazel. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay background is beargrass with maidenhair fern designs. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .25 inch, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to .5 inch below the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is four sets of three stacked parallelograms with diagonal lines running through them. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay background is red-dyed woodwardia with maidenhair fern and beargrass designs. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining. Plain twining continues to .5 inch from the rim, where there is one weft row of lattice twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is six elements of beargrass stepped triangles. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided with some overlay on the backface, with the design on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Karuk based on the extensive use of red-dyed woodwardia.

"Squaw Cap Klamath lev [?] Calif". Per Ralph Shanks: Woman’s twined basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is possibly hazel. The background wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, a black dyed material-possibly dyed confer root, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining. After that, there is one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim where there is another weft row of three strand twining. After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed. The design background is conifer root. Starting at the starting knot there is a half of an inch of conifer root with no overlay. The basket has multiple horizontal one weft rows comprised of maidenhair fern. A sun/flower pattern is formed by beargrass triangles at the start. The main design is formed by a several elements comprised of a triangle surrounded by smaller triangles. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The overlay is only on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Wiyot. The Wiyot and peoples South of them were known to dye conifer root as seen in this basket.
