Hearst Museum object titled Plaque, accession number 1-255551, described as Twined. Round with slight concave. Open weave from rim .5 cm; yellow with brown center and edge. Design is five black terraced elements pointed outwards inset with yellow triangles, alternating with hanging rectangles inset with yellow triangles pointed inward. A black triangle hangs from each rectangle. Rim is alternating brown and yellow. Tag "Klamath River Tribes". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket plaque. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, slightly indented. The warp material is probably hazel. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and two unidentified materials, one possibly a greeenish grey dyed beargrass, the other a brown material that could be faded red-dyed woodwardia. At the starting knot there is .5 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until .5 inch below the rim where there are two weft rows of three strand twining, followed by .25 inch of openwork. The rim is formed by at least three weft rows of plain twining with one rod that was added to support the rim. The rim is wrapped in beargrass and possibly faded red-dyed woodwardia. The design includes one band of triangles, followed by two bands of geometric clusters, followed by one band of triangles near the rim. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction. The overlay is primarily one-sided. The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Karuk based on the area of collection.
