Plain twining in unusual shape. 3 strand twining around start, below rim are several rows of "beading" in yellowish - white overlay separated by two encircling bands of 3 strand twining. 3 cm line of alternating yellowish - white "beading" and ground color in field. Plain twining. Conifer root and white grass.

The warp material is probably willow. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design is beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining 1/2 inch below the rim. The rim is trimmed. The main design is three sets of five diagonally stacked woodwardia and maidenhair rectangles with triangles on either side. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior. The basket is from Northwest California. There are two light hairs woven into the top exterior of the hat.

Triangular design in red - brown and black on glossy yellowish white field. Small break in one area of edge. Tag "Klamath River". Per Ralph Shanks: Woman’s twined hat. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably willow. The background wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, red dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.25 inches of plain twining. After that, there is one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim where there is another weft row of three strand twining. After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed. The design background overlay is beargrass. The design at the start is formed by an encircling row of maidenhair fern, surrounded by a circle of woodwardia triangles. A second design follows that with overlay over the three strand twining with triangles of woodwardia outlined by maidenhair fern below it. The main design is comprised of a maidenhair band with repeating elements comprised of three triangles and a diamond. The design above the rim is a repeat of the three strand twining with overlay and a band of triangles above it. At the rim are four sets of two triangles. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The overlay is on the exterior, with some pattern coming through to the other side. The basket is from Northwestern California.
