Hearst Museum object titled Sifter basket, accession number 1-2991, described as Sifter basket; coiled. Warp is Epicampes (Sporobolus rigens), weft is Sedge (Carex). Red pattern is Redbud (Cercis occidentalis). Black pattern is Brake fern (Pteris quilina). Three complex colored bands, designs in redbud shoot and brackenfern root materials, horizontal zigzags and linear bands.

White pattern is Beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). Grimy from use. After 3 strand portion in center was twined, it was twined over and warps added. Designs are on inside of basket. Plain twined. Almost completely overlain with white single faced overlay, floated on back.  Repeating zigzag design.

Hearst Museum object titled Sifter basket, accession number 1-10522, described as Flat openwork plain twined acorn sifter.  Tag:  "Nongatl". Per Ralph Shanks:  Open-work twined acorn sifter.  Crossed warp starting knot.  Peeled shoot warps and peeled shoot wefts.  Starting at the starting knot there is 1 inch of close plain twining, followed by 3 inches of openwork plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining followed by 2 3/4 inches of plain openwork twining, followed by 1 weft row of close twining over one warp, followed by two weft rows of plain twining over two warps, followed by one weft row of plain twining over one warp. The warps converge where warp sticks are added, but are otherwise parallel. The rim is trimmed, with the warps extending up to a 1/4 inch above the last weft row. The workface is on the exterior.  The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist. Warp is Hazel (Corylus cornuta californica), weft is Alder root (Alnus).

White pattern is Beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). Mended with cloth in middle. Grimy and worn from use. Breaks in rim hole in bottom mended with a coated, canvas like fabric. Sewn with cotton string. Plain twined, white overlay floated on back.

White 2 faced overlay. 1 row 3 strand twining approximately 2 cm from edge. Mostly solid, dotted and vertical stripes.

Crossed warp starting knot.  Probably willow (Salix) warps with peeled willow wefts.  Starting at the starting knot there is diagonal twining for 2 inches followed by a single weft row of three strand twining, followed by 1 inch of diagonal twining, followed by two weft rows of plain twining, followed by two weft rows of three strand twining, followed by 2 inches of predominately diagonal twining, followed by a 1/2 inch of plain twining, followed by four weft rows of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed, with the warp sticks sticking out above the rim.  The workface is on the exterior.  The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.  There is no overlay.  There are variable sized wefts.  This basket is not typical of Northwestern California trays.

White pattern is Beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). Very grimy from use. Worn. 1 hole in edge. Plain twined. Started in 3 strand twining, and then turned over and twining continued. White overlay floated on back. Dark parallel lines radiate from center.  Zigzag motif.
