Hearst Museum object titled Basket rattle, accession number 1-164139, described as Elongated basketry rattle.  Twined openwork.  Shell and bottle cap inside.  Tag "Klamath R. tribes att.".  Second tag: "NW. Calif. attr.". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined openwork rattle.  There is a bottle cap and several shells inside.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably willow or hazel.  The weft material is hazel or willow.  Starting at the starting knot, there is plain twining over multiple warps to the edge of the base.  Going up the sides of the rattle the wefts are primarily over one warp.  The openwork twining is primarily parallel and with some crossed.   The rim is trimmed, and is partially damaged.   The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.  There is a hair woven into the basket.
