Hearst Museum object titled Pillow end, accession number 9-21258, described as Pillow ends. Piece of red rayon for ends of neck pillow. Patterned coarse weave to be cut in half. Either end has character for “Double Joy” embroidered in satin stitch flanked by a plant design coarsely drawn and miserably embroidered. Mounted in paper. (Donor’s notes) Fabric 16.5 cm L, 9.8 cm W.
Hearst Museum object titled Samples of embroidery stitches, accession number 3-29308a-cc, described as Textile samples; group of Guatemalan embroidery technique samples, attributed to Lila O'Neale - several types of edging, closure and embellishment shown; provenience notes attached. i) panel with 2 samples of embroidery from Guatemala. 1: yellow leaves and flower stems attached to a twining green stem. uses chain and buttonhole stitches. 2: bordered panel (red chain stitch) filled with flowers and leaves (red, pink, purple, brown, aqua, green) using buttonhole stitch. j) sample containing 3 samples of Guatemalan embroidery on linen base fabric. 1: chain stitch formed into a roundel. 2: French knots formed into a circle. 3: couching of yellow ochre thread with ecru thread forming a roundel. n) samples of embroidery stitches used to join 2 pieces of fabric attached to a supporting piece of paper. 4 stitch samples. paper labels pasted to backing fabric define location and information about each stitch. also notes on backing paper made by Donor. o) sample containing 16 sample Guatemalan embroidery stitches with information tags pasted to backing of fabric defining origin of stitch and sometimes type of stitch. backing fabric appears to be linen.
Hearst Museum object titled Shoes, accession number 9-21282a,b, described as Shoes. Pair of black shoes for “lily” (bound) feet. Black satin uppers with embroidered vase-and-flowers decoration. Upper edge covered with sapphire blue satin ending in two lines of white stitching. Back seam sewn with violet thread. Front seam overlaid with a tan cord wrapped in sapphire blue satin and tipped below, with a tan knot and on top, in red braid. A tab at top of heel is of cotton-faced ivory satin, 2.2 cm to 3.9 cm wide and ending in a point. Two sapphire blue strips of satin cover the chevron end. Backside of embroidery visible on the apparently unfinished inside of the uppers, in white cotton facing. Uppers stitched directly to padded, white cotton lined soles. Bottom surfaces white satin with stitched-in same-color pattern of apple (homophonous with “Peace”) over the “jui-i” scepter (May everything turn out as you wish). Heel of sole covered with apple-green silk (?) and a band of cinnabar paper, mostly worn off. Triple-layered, white fabric, egg-shaped heel tapers off forward to only two layers. Heel bottom covered with grey cloth stitched to the upper layers. Overall length of sole: 13.2 cm; greatest width of heel: 5.2 cm.
